Keynotes November 2014

Welcome back….

Well, it was a strange start to our year with the delay in school opening but the students put a good effort into getting back to routine. There are some new faces you will meet at recitals, if you haven’t already. Starting piano are Riley, Ben and Madison, and Christopher is returning to piano studies. Welcome to all.

Calendar change….

I was so surprised to find the February recital date already booked by September. Please insure you have adjusted your calendars to reflect the change. The winter recital is February 21, not the 28th. December 15 and May 30 remain unchanged.

Special Fall project….

Though not well received at its premier in 1875, Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saens is perhaps his most popular and well known piece. This symphonic poem was inspired by the Paris catacombs and he explored some very innovative new techniques for orchestral instruments to create his rambunctious, dancing skeletons. I have introduced or reviewed the instruments of the orchestra in preparation for this exploration and the students have all found the music creates some wonderful visual imagery. All students have been invited to prepare an artistic assignment referencing Danse Macabre. This assignment should not demand more than about 45 min. of their time, though some will want to devote more. It can be any number of things, including a picture, collage, poem, puppet, short composition, diorama, etc. Students are to turn in their efforts at the last October lesson. Please contact me if your child needs an extension. The finished projects will be on display for a couple of weeks and you are welcome to drop in for a look.
