Developing Musicians Through Piano Study
I teach piano at all levels and all ages, preschoolers to grandparents. A student enthused about music and willing to work is all that is needed.
I strive to develop a musician, most of all. We use the piano to develop playing, reading, listening, interpretive, and creative skills. Repertoire, technique, theory, sight reading, ear training and composing all provide vehicles for learning. I select materials for students based on individual skills and preferences.
Enjoying and sharing music throughout life is the goal for my students. We share through 3 yearly recitals, festivals, exams and informally, with friends. Students are encouraged to also participate in school choirs and bands, which enhances their critical listening.
During the year I include 1 or 2 side projects for all students that involve learning about composers, musical eras, musical styles or larger works such as Vivaldi's Four Seasons. These listening experiences afford the student an opportunity to become better acquainted with other instrumental sounds and that informs their own playing..
I am a 3rd generation pianist and piano/theory teacher. I have studied with Winnifred Proud, Lloyd Powell and Glen Geary. I teach music using the piano as the primary instrument. Along with teaching piano at all levels, I also work as a church musician, playing for services and directing choir. I particularly enjoy also working as a pianist for choirs, soloists (vocal or instrumental) and instrumental ensembles. I am currently retired from teaching as a music specialist in District 43 (Coquitlam), which included guitar, handbell choir, recorder, Orff, and choral direction.
I have done some composing, including an entry for the CBC Hockey Night in Canada theme contest in 2008.
I began student teaching at age 13 while completing my RCM Grade 10 piano. I have continued with varying numbers of students since then for over 40 years. Teaching in the public schools for 7 years has added additional insight to working as an independent music teacher. Lorna Yeates is a third generation musician. After studying first with my mother and grandmother, I continued onto UBC to study piano and harpsichord. With the completion of my RCM piano teacher’s degree and UBC Education degree, I taught in the Coquitlam schools as a music specialist. In 2015 I returned to UBC and completed the last two years of my music degree.
In 1988 I decided to leave the public school system and commenced my career as a professional musician. This consists of me performing as a pianist (specializing in accompanying), teaching music, and composing.
I am the pianist for the Coquitlam Chorale, church musician at King Of Life Lutheran Church in Coquitlam, and enjoy freelance work as an accompanist as well as solo and group performances.
My compositions have been well received throughout the years. My music has been used as the theme for retreats, for congregational use, and for commercial purposes.
